Swedish massage is considered the foundation of most other western massage modalities. There are 5 main strokes of a Swedish massage. Long broad strokes of effleurage relax and warm the tissue which is usually lighter or more superficial. Petrissage involves “kneading” the muscle tissue much like kneading dough to open things up and create more circulation. Friction is more brisk and may create heat deeper in the muscle to relieve adhesions and scar tissue. Rocking, shaking, or vibration can fire up the nerves to loosen muscles around the joints. Tapotement is gentle striking to the body which initially stimulates the nerves but becomes more sedative later. It is also used as an aid for decongesting the lungs. Swedish massage is great all by itself but is also used in conjunction with other massage modalities.
